Rain Gutters, Do we need them?

Thursday, September 24th, 2009

If you look around your neighborhood, you will notice that most of homes have gutters. Some have elaborate gutter systems covering all areas. Others have only certain area’s targeted. And others have none at all.

So whats keeping people from protecting there most valuable asset? Well, usually it is the up front costs of guttering your home. The other reason would be looks. Some people are concerned that gutters will not look nice on there home.

There are many reasons why people decide to put gutters on there home.

1. Over doors and entry ways - This will help keep somebody from getting soaked when traveling from the garage to the house or in and out of the front door. Rain Gutters, Do we need them? It always will prevent ice build it in the winter months.

2. In the front of the home. On many home styles, the front of the house needs to be protected since there is not adequate grading to naturally move water from away from the front of the house. This ensures that water will not seep into the basement.

3. Around Landscaping. Expensive landscaping is worth protecting. Many homeowners get frustrated with the wood chips and rocks washing away. Gutters seem to be an effective way to solve this problem.

4. Over Decking, Patio’s and Driveways. Constant water heavily pouring over these areas will cause continued damage year after year. Guttering over these areas will protect them.

Deck Damage

5. To Protect Siding, Decking, Stucco and Windows. Your roof lines will cause water to fall onto your house at different volumes. When more water is falling on one spot of the home compared to another, it will weather different than others areas. This is why you see stained brick, siding and damage windows on homes without Seamless Gutters.

6. Basement Flooding and mold. The cost of a Seamless Gutter job will pay for itself 20 times over if it protects your basement from flooding. Homeowners commonly make the mistake of relying on there sub-pump. What these homeowners fail to recognize is that if there power goes out during a heavy storm, there sub-pump will not work. This is not a situation you want to be in.

These 6 reasons are why most of my clients decide to protect there entire homes with New Seamless Gutters. In Minnesota, we have extreme weather and need to take all the steps to protect our homes.

Seamless Gutters have a quick payoff considering the added convenience of not having water pouring on you, protection of the exteriors, and most importantly, the eliminating the chances of mold and basement flooding.

And most importantly, Seamless Gutters are a one time investment, considering the better companies in Minnesota are offering lifetime warranties on there gutter instalation.

On most homes, Seamless Gutters acually blend in very well. On some high end custom homes, a custom gutter job will need to be completed. If you have one of these types of homes, I generally recommend not trying to hide them, but instead, emphasize them. Copper works very well for this. Also, there are endless color options today so you can use your gutters as a way to tie in the color scheme of your home. Instead of hiding them, use them to bring texture to your home. It actually does work very well. But in most situations, you are just going to match the siding and fascia.

Leaf Protection MN

There are many different types of leaf protection available for your gutters in now days. In MN, Leaf Protection is very common due to the rapidly changing seasons. Chances are, if you live in a area with trees, your going to want to protect your home with quality gutter covers, that will last a long time and be backed by a warranty.

When getting ready to purchase new gutters for your home, many homeowners are finding that the leaf protection market is getting very complicated. Foams, Covers, Screens, Hoods??? For a seamless gutter and hood combo – Your generally looking at paying around $8-$22 a ft. installed – Without downspouts. I know what your thinking, that’s quite a range! The truth is, not all covers are created equal. But the price tag is not always the only indicator of quality. When the salesmen is at your house, always take out the house and see if the product overflows. Then look at the gaps in the leaf protection – To Big, your going to get seeds and leaves in. Too small, and your begging for mold. And lastly, look at the quality of the materials. Vinyl and plastic hoods are a big no no.

Lets go over a few of the different types of Leaf Free Gutter Systems available in MN today:

One Piece Seamless Systems

- This is a trademarked one piece system that offers a lifetime no clog warranty.

Up side – Product usually comes with extensive warranties.

Downside – Incredible expensive costs, has a reputation of overflowing on hard rains. Cannot install on a current gutter system.

Gutter Topper Systems

Another Quality topper that is sold through some select Gutter franchises across the state.

Up side – Great lifetime Warranty

Downside – Very High Price Tag,  The product is not attractive, simply to large.

Premier Gutter Cover

Another quality gutter cover that comes with a lifetime warranty.

Upside – Combines the qualities of screen and hood. Will not overflow even on steep roofs, low profile design, long lasting aluminum material, affordable compared to the “big brands”

Downside – The only downside I have seen when installing it is the occasional spinner sticking into the screen.

Gutters MN

There are many Seamless Gutters companies in Minnesota.  Picking the right seamless gutter company for your project can be difficult.  You likely will get 2-3 bids and the install costs could range significantly. Sometimes the cheapest company will not be the right decision, other times they will.  Some of the more important things to consider when picking a gutter company in MN would be:

10 things you as the consumer must know:

1. Insured – Installing Gutters on your home is a dangerous work. Make sure that the company you use has both Work Comp and General Liability Insurance.

2. Seamless – Make sure that the Minnesota Gutter Company you use is going to install Seamless Gutters.

3. Quality and Warranties - When you hire a Gutter Company you want to make there are committed to quality and warranties.

4. References – Your Gutter Company should have address of jobs in your area that you can check out to make sure they really are as good as they say they are.

5. Employees – Make sure that the Seamless Gutter Company you choose in MN has Employees and does not use subcontractors. This means that they will not simply be acting as a middleman and driving up the cost on your project.

6. Color – Make sure the salesmen gets the color right, since Seamless Gutters are a permanent thing, and once you make the investment you want it to be done for good.

7. Gutter Guard MN - Make sure that if you have many trees on your home you weigh the benefits of having a gutter guard installed.

8. High Quality Materials – If your paying for profesinal service you better be getting professional quality materials. A good gutter company will have direct pricing on there materials and be able to offer you high quality materials that you could not buy for double the costs.

9. Adequate Downspouts – Many companies will offer less downspouts to drive down the cost of the Gutter Install. Don’t skimp out on downspouts, they are vital to your system working correctly.

10. Experience - Make sure that the employees from the company that are going to be doing the install are well paid  and experienced.  Or better yet, sometimes the owner him/herself will be doing the install themselves!

Hopefully, after taking all these things into consideration you will be able to find a Gutter Company that not only offers you a competitive price, but also the professionalism and quality that you expect when you hire somebody.

Gutter Cleaning in MN

Saturday, September 19th, 2009

It happens every year, summer turns to fall, and eventually the leaves fall from the tree’s and land directly into your gutter system. It is vital to make sure that you keep these leaves out of your gutters. Cleaning your gutters weekly will be required  from late September to early November, to keep your gutters working correctly and keeping your foundation and basement dry.

There are options to avoid cleaning your gutters. Although they do require a intial investment, if you think about they do pay for themselves rather quickly. To have your gutters cleaned by a insured company is going to cost you roughly $50-$150 fall and spring. That means that almost all homeowners would have less then a five year payoff when they invest in a leaf protection system that comes with a lifetime warranty on clogging.

There are many different types of leaf protection available. You have gutter screens, gutter covers, gutter helmets and gutter fillers. All of these are readily available in Minnesota. They come in a assortment of brands and styles. It is important that you choose the right leaf guard for your home. There are some types of leaf protection that do not clog even with the dreaded “spinners”. They will not overflow and they will not clog. It is important that you have a contractor install them that will offer a warranty to go along with these items.

This will require taking into account the pitch of your roof, the water volume, the tree types, and budget/expectations. There is a lot of hype in the seamless gutter industry about Leaf Protection. Many companies only sell one type. There are other companies that offer every type so they can offer you the best leaf guard for your home.
